31 Days of a Small Town Gal (Day 23): yes, we have a museum.

{Welcome to our October series, "31 Days of a Small Town Gal". You are on Day 23. Missed any previous posts? Click {here} to catch up!}

Yesterday, as a small "homeschool field trip", we took a tour of the Historical Society/Campbell County Museum. Yes. Do not adjust your monitors. We have a museum in our county:

I'll have to say--I was really impressed. I hope they are able to continue to grow this museum as the years go on. (Grab a copy of the Press this week to read the full story about our journey there!). There was a room for schooling, coal mining, military, churches, and the hallways were lined with old framed photos that told stories all their own.

When we first arrived, the elderly gentleman that served as the museum's curator proudly stated, "This tour will take about an hour and a half". WHOA. Three kids in a "no touch" museum for 90 minutes?! Ain't happenin'. But, he was very gracious and mindful of short attention spans, and really made it interesting for the kids:

::Graduating class of 1917::

::My parents will love this! (Mom was a LaFollette Owl, Dad a Clinton Dragon)::

::Paddles. Apparently also referred to as "teacher's aides"::

 We viewed old hand painted porcelain, a display dedicated to General Carl Stiner, and other military memorabilia:

This was a dress that girls used to wear back in the early 1900s that was "fashionable", the curator explained. Oh, and the black strands hanging from the shoulders of the dress? Yeah, that's HUMAN HAIR:

The tour was really interesting, and I would love to go back another time when Eden and I could ask more questions. Also notice August holding a troll doll above? The curator gave them toys when they walked through the door. Very kind. But they were trolls. And August carried that "troll on a skateboard" around with him non-stop yesterday (also, can you find the Pup Pup cameo?). And Eden was concerned that her troll was naked, because he "wasn't being modest" (Eden's take on modesty is {here}).

::Church I grew up in, was baptized at, and held our wedding reception there::
::Future writer, you ask??::
We learned so much about our small town yesterday! Stick with us, and see where we go in tomorrow's post!

Andrew: Kudos to you! I never realized how many pictures that stuffed dog sneaks his way in to until recently ;)

Aurie: I know, right? Eww. I even asked the curator a second time, just for clarification. Yep. Human hair...

Amie: I really enjoyed it, and was pleasantly surprised. I think I'll go back one day with just Eden since the boys were getting a little antsy :)
