31 Days of a Small Town Gal (Day 5): where I spent my summer.

{Welcome to our October series, "31 Days of a Small Town Gal". You are on Day 5. Missed any previous posts? Click {here} to catch up!}

We were there. Almost every day. I would wash my hair but not dry it, didn't even think about the makeup, pack a lunch that usually consisted of a PB&J, string cheese, baby dill pickles, and Cheez-Its, and we would head out around 10:30am, before it became too crowded or too hot:

The kids would run, and run, and run some more, only stopping for a quick sip of juice before they were back on the watery pavement again. One of the signs reads "no squirt guns", but the word "squirt" is misspelled, so I would try not to look at it so my blood pressure would stay at a healthy level, and one could always, always find an old Band Aid.

Welcome to the LaFollette Splash Park.

Some said I had a decent tan this summer. I worked hard on it, standing on wet pavement in direct sunlight, keeping the bigger kids from running over my smaller kids (see also: mall play area...). And on the days they would be randomly closed for whatever sundry reason, we would create our own little at-home splash park in the only flat spot in our yard:

You may think this is a random way to spend a summer. Folks, it.is.FREE. And factor in plenty of slushies and great naptimes, I find this a perfect recipe for a small town summer.
